1984 – 2022
Craig W. Gillman of Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, age 37, passed away on February 11, 2022. Craig was born on March 9, 1984 in Bay City, Michigan to Mark W. Gillman and Suzanne J. ( nee Ahlberg) Gillman. He grew up in Algonac, Michigan where he spent fun-filled days on the water: boating, wakeboarding, swimming, and fishing with family and friends. Craig played Little League Baseball switching between multiple positions including pitcher and catcher. He excelled on his team with the American Youth Soccer Organization. His dad was the coach, and he became lifelong friends with many of his teammates. Craig attended Algonac High School where he played varsity soccer and tennis. Outside of high school, Craig skated for an ice hockey team in Port Huron and a roller hockey team at the Joe Dumars Fieldhouse. Traveling with his roller hockey team to the national finals in Atlanta, Georgia was the culmination of his hockey career.
He studied at Oakland University in Auburn Hills, Michigan where he double majored and earned Bachelor of Science Degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering. After graduation, Craig worked for DTE Energy on computer controls. He expanded his experience in controls with companies in North Carolina, Florida, and Georgia. Craig’s favorite job was as a sales application engineer for a maritime start-up company in Fort Lauderdale, Florida where he enjoyed sunny days out on the water testing instrumentation on boats. His last job in Florida was with New Fortress Energy.
Craig enjoyed biking, running, and gaming. He had a witty sense of humor and loved being the life of the party. He could always be counted on to bring the blender. Craig married the love of his life, Laura Marie Chatterton, at the Margaritaville Resort in Hollywood, Florida on December 19, 2015. Craig’s son, Graham William Gillman, who he lovingly called Grahammy, arrived on September 27, 2019. Craig delighted in spending time with Laura and Graham watching Cocomelon, going to the beach and zoo, and playing with their dogs, Ben and Charlie. He was dearly loved by his family and friends. Words cannot express how much Craig will be missed as a husband, father, son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend. Our hearts are broken.
Craig is survived by his wife, Laura Gillman and his son, Graham; his parents, Mark and Sue Gillman; his mother and father in-law Michael and Cheryl Zito; his sisters, Shelly (David) Kepczynski and Julie (Albert “Chip”) VanDenBergh, his sister-in-law Cynthia (Ross) Markesino and Marisa Zito; his brother in-law Philip Zito; and his nieces and nephews, Rachel, Josh, Luke, Lily, Sarah, Olivia, Owen and Anna. He is predeceased by his nephew Owen Mark VanDenBergh and his mother and father in-law Thomas and Mary Chatterton (Laura’s parents).
Visitation will be on Monday February 21, 2022 from 4 pm to 8 pm with a memory sharing at 7:00 pm at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue, Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan.
