Dennis William Hickey will be remembered for his dedication to his family, friends, and faith. Dennis, 79, died July 11. "My dad was a gregarious man. Everybody loved him. When people would say how are you, he would joke, Im good, the devil takes care of his own," his daughter, Lynn Stacey, said. "He would get up at four in the morning and shovel the snow for his neighbors, even when they didnt ask, and then check on his sisters. He made sure everyone had what they needed. Even his dog JJ was the recipient of his undivided attention." Dennis grew up in Detroit, where he worked with his mother, who owned a local market near St. David Catholic Church. He never regretted bypassing extra-curricular activities to work in the family business, his other daughter, Denise Hickey, said. "He had so much love and admiration for his mother and her ability to raise a family of four children, and that love spilled over to us as we grew up," Denise said. "My parents were married for 55 years. They had such a strong bond. Our mother, Peggy, takes comfort in knowing my dad is in heaven with his mother and his friend, Terry McManus." Dennis, a graduate of St. David Catholic School, De La Salle Collegiate High School, and University of Detroit (BBA and MBA), was an executive with Sears, Roebuck and Company, where he retired after 36 years. He was an active member of the Senior Mens Club of Grosse Pointe. Also surviving are his beloved grandsons, Andrew Stacey and Dennis Burmeister, who were the light of his life; siblings Dick Hickey (the late Ruth), Sr. Colleen Hickey, SSJ, and Mary Jean Dailey (the late Jack); brothers-in-law Peter (Marilyn) and Tony (Michelle); nieces and nephews Kathy (Jon), Kevin, Karen, Bob (Lori), Laura (David), Mike (Mary), Lisa (Randy), Christine (Ed), Eric (Shannon), Matthew (Lisa), Colin, Caitlin, Brendan, and Brian; many grandnieces and grandnephews; and a large number of "Cousins by the Dozens." A memorial gathering will be held at 11:30 AM on Friday, July 20, at St. Paul on the Lake Catholic Church, 157 Lake Shore Rd., Grosse Pointe Farms. The memorial mass will follow at St. Paul at noon. Contributions to the Capuchin Monastery are appreciated in lieu of flowers. Ahpeters.com
