Gloria May Stolmar Sweeney was born in N. Braddock, Pennsylvania on Oct. 19, 1927 and departed on August 29, 2015, resided in Grosse Pointe Park, MI. Gloria May Stolmar was born on October 19, 1927, the oldest child of Hungarian immigrants, Frank and Anna Stolmar. Her family moved to Detroit when Gloria was very young, but her ties to her Hungarian roots lasted throughout her lifetime. Gloria graduated from Cooley High School, class of 1945, and attended the University of Detroit where she met her future husband, Stephen Sweeney, later a prominent Detroit attorney. Gloria and Steve shared a passion for the arts and were longtime Detroit Symphony and Michigan Opera Theatre patrons as well as supporters of the DIA. Gloria herself became a proficient artist; was an avid gardener, club level tennis player and gourmet cook. Gloria was a generous friend and an entertaining hostess. She and Steve loved to socialize and were known among their circle as "Ginger and Fred." Gloria's favorite trips were the excursion on the Orient Express, a cruise to Giza, Egypt to view the pyramids and the many vacations with her grandchildren to Disney World. A devoted mother and grandmother, Gloria's joie de vivre was made manifest to her grandchildren through their various shared adventures whenever she babysat. There were specimen pressed-leaf books when they went on nature walks to learn the names of trees; there were dry cleaner tag "medals" pinned on when they outwitted villains in their imaginative spy games; there were personalized bowling balls when she taught them to bowl after school. Gloria also shared her oversized love of holidays and especially of fireworks every 4th of July. In later years, Gloria gave back to her community by volunteering with the Bon Secours Assistance League. Gloria was mother to her daughters, Sue-Anne Sweeney (James Luke), Sandra Taylor (Kevin) and the late Robert Sweeney. She was grandmother to Meghan Taylor, Sean Taylor and Jonathan Luke; and loving sister to her siblings, Frank Stolmar and the late Dorothy Wood and the late Gary Stolmar.
