

Lucie Palmer Meade Beard, age 92, died at her home on November 26, 2014. Lucie was born in Arlington, VA on February 20, 1922, the daughter of Hodijah and Mary Meade. She grew up in Arlington and was a graduate of Washington-Lee High School. In 1942, Lucie married Ward Beard in Arlington, Virginia. The young couple began their married life in Port Huron, where they started their family. They moved to Williamston, MI. where they lived for 10 years. Lucie attended Michigan State University where she earned her Bachelor's Degree, Cum Laude. She went on to receive her Master's Degree in Library Science from Wayne State University. When they moved to Detroit, Lucie worked for Gale Research. Later, Lucie worked at Sinai Hospital as a medical librarian. She eventually was transferred to the Detroit Medical Center where she continued working as a medical librarian. Mrs. Beard was a member of AAUW (American Association of University Women), the League of Women Voters, the Easy Riders Bicycle Club and the Grosse Pointe Unitarian Church and its Women's Alliance. Lucie enjoyed playing bridge; making china, including designing, painting and firing the pieces in her own kiln; and gardening. Lucie is survived by her five children; Mary Beard Campbell (Steven), William Beard (Annette), Russell Beard (Diane), James Beard and Thomas Beard (Diane); her eight grandchildren, Abbey, Sarah, Alex, Jennifer, Todd, Glenn, James, Daniel, and Brittany, and twelve great-grandchildren, Griffin, Natalie, Addison, Brett, Landric, Ashtyn, Zoey, Connor, John, Adyn, Ashton, Chloe, Brecken, Amita and Silas. She was predeceased by her husband, Ward and a grandson, Eric. Memorial visitation will be held from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 13 at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods. Her memorial service will be held at 4:00 pm Sunday, December 14 at Grosse Pointe Unitarian Church, 17150 Maumee, Grosse Pointe 48230. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to American Association of University Women, 1111 Sixteenth St. NW; Washington, DC 20036.
