Margaret Virginia Guest

Margaret V. Guest, age 73, died peacefully at her home on June 13, 2011 after a long illness. She was born in Oswego, New York on October 20, 1937, the first of what would be 18 children of John and Mary (O'Brien) Callaghan. The family moved to Detroit's eastside in the early 1940's, and Margaret graduated from St. Catherine's High School in 1956. She continued her education and graduated Marygrove College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education. She was one of only two women from her high school class who went on to college. In 1960 she married Michael Guest at Holy Name Catholic Church in Birmingham. She taught elementary school in Detroit after they were married while Michael finished dental school. She soon became a full time mother to her family of seven children. The spirit of teaching compelled her to return to the classroom after her children were raised. She taught Adult Education in the East Detroit School District, was involved with the latch-key program at Ferry Elementary School in Grosse Pointe Woods, and led the RCIA program at St. Joan of Arc Church in St. Clair Shores. Margaret was known as a doting mother and grandmother. She quilted and made baby blankets for all of her grandchildren, and grand nieces and nephews. Margaret was a devoted, faithful Catholic who often attended daily mass. She loved to play Scrabble and was described as vicious in her determination to win, even when she played with her grandchildren! When Margaret's parents required assistance with their daily living, she visited weekly at their home in Beverly Hills to care for them. Her affinity to help other people, not just her family, was demonstrated when she became a caregiver for two elderly neighbor ladies. Mrs. Guest is survived by her loving children; Michael Guest (Barbara), Mary Anderson (Brian Pearsall), Elizabeth Berry (Ronald), Matthew Guest (Christine), Gregory Guest, Jerome Guest(Alexandra) and Stephen Guest (Patricia); her cherished 14 grandchildren; John-Michael, James, Julia, Katherine, Nathan, Jennifer, Amanda, Adam, Jack, Melissa, Madeleine, Christopher, Meredith and Justin; and 14 brothers and sisters; John Callaghan (Mary Ann), Paul Callaghan (Linda), James Callaghan (Hilary), Edward Callaghan (Mary Lynn), Kathleen Callahan (Vincent), Clare Jorgensen (Robert), William Callaghan (Rose Ann), Christopher Callaghan (Patricia), Kevin Callaghan (Jean), Mary Lynch (Patrick), Joseph Callaghan (Maureen), Teresa Crisman (Harold), Patrick Callaghan (Gail) and Bridget Ebbing (John). She is predeceased by her husband Michael J. Guest D.D.S, parents John and Mary Callaghan, brother Brian Callaghan and her sisters Ann Callaghan and Patricia Malley. Memorial visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Friday at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods. The Holy Rosary will be recited beginning at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday visitation will continue at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 21620 Greater Mack at Overlake in St. Clair Shores from 9:30 a.m. until mass begins at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Msgrs. G. Michael Bugarin and Ricardo Bass will officiate. Memorial contributions may be sent to St. Vincent DePaul Society, St. Joan of Arc Conference, 21412 Overlake, St. Clair Shores, MI 48080.
