

Mary Agnes Cavanagh, age 88, longtime resident of Grosse Pointe Woods, more recently of Traverse City, died Friday February 10, 2012, in Traverse City. She was born November 24, 1923 the daughter of Lauren and Gladys (nee Purcell) Howe. Mary was a student at St. Ambrose Elementary School and a graduate of Dominican High School Class of 1941. She served proudly in the U.S. Marine Corp during WW II and was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal. After the service, she attended Michigan State University for teaching and later taught English at St. Peters Catholic Elementary School, Harper Woods. She deeply loved her family, friends, new acquaintances, a good book, crossword puzzles and life in general. Mary was a devout Catholic - staunch Democrat - a U.S. Marine and was very proud of being 100% Irish. Wife of the late Robert. Loving mother of Michael (Denise), Christopher (Suzanne), Peggy (Douglas Strong), Nancy (Michael) Brown, and Thomas (Barbara). Proud grandmother of 15 and great-grandmother of Ada. Visitation at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave at Vernier Rd., Grosse Pointe Woods on Wednesday from 12:30-9:00pm with an Irish Wake at 7:00pm. Funeral Thursday at St Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 21620 Greater Mack, St Clair Shores, in state 9:30am until time of Mass 10:00am.
