Mary Ester Hazebrook

Adventurer, Counselor, Mother, Grandmother, and Compassionate Spirit

Mary Ester Hazebrook, passed away unexpectedly on June 25, 2025, in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan. Born on April 24, 1955, in Grosse Pointe, she was the beloved daughter of the late Robert and Bice Powers.

She was the loving wife of the late Robert Strange and Joseph Hazebrook, and the proud mother of Shyla (Doug) and Lorelle (Tom). She was a devoted and adoring grandmother to Jaden, Milan, Canyon, and Talia. Mary is also survived by her siblings, Leslie (Brian) and Pam (Clay), and her brothers-in-law, DJ and Kirk and sister-in-law Janet.

Mary was a woman of extraordinary resilience, having endured life’s hardships with strength and an unwavering zest for life. She traveled the world solo with a fearless spirit, immersing herself in new cultures and forging connections across continents. Despite her naturally shy demeanor, she regularly challenged herself to meet new people, join new clubs, explore new hobbies, and give back to her community through countless hours of volunteer work. She was an enthusiastic supporter of democratic causes, often knocking on doors to advocate for the candidates and issues she believed in.

Professionally, Mary was a dedicated high school counselor. One of her greatest passions was mentoring teenagers on their paths to college. She found deep fulfillment in helping students identify their goals, navigate the admissions process, and secure scholarships that made higher education possible.

Mary also cherished time spent in nature, especially hiking, gardening and sailing.

Mary's compassion, adventurous soul, and tireless dedication to others will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 9 at 4:30 PM at Grosse Pointe Woods Presbyterian Church, 19950 Mack, Grosse Pointe Woods. A celebration of her life will follow at Bayview Yacht Club, 100 Clairpointe St, Detroit. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a non-profit that Mary supported: The Epilepsy Foundation.
