"Menschen, die wir lieben, bleiben fr immer, denn sie hinterlassen Spuren in unseren Herzen." ("People, whom we love, remain forever, since they leave behind their tracks in our hearts.") Michael Haas, M.D., "Mike" and "Doc" to friends and family, passed away peacefully in his Grosse Pointe Shores home on Saturday, March 25 around noon from heart failure. He was 88 years old. Born in the Roman Catholic Swabian village of Siegmundfeld, Serbia on March 5, 1929, Michael used his wits, determination, and energy to survive war, hunger, and poverty. There and then - in post-WWII Europe - he discovered and determined to pursue his passion: a career in medicine. Immigrating to America in 1949, he served honorably in the U. S. Army 2nd Medical Corp from 1951 to 1953. Moving from Baltimore to Detroit, he first earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Detroit College of Applied Science in 1958. He returned to Austria and earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Graz in 1963. Returning to Detroit, Michael began his medical career at St. John Hospital, and his private family medical practice from 1966 to 1994. Not ready to give up his lifelong passion, he efficiently and enthusiastically managed St. John's Same Day Surgery department until 2010. His numerous patients, colleagues, friends, and family alike respected and admired his skill, generosity, and unfaltering professionalism. In 2006 St. John Hospital paid their tribute by entering Dr. Haas on their "Wall of Honor". Michael was remarkably talented in many endeavors, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, tiling, even farming! Never idle, he loved to get involved in all manner of projects and handyman work, helping friends, neighbors, and family every chance he could. He loved spending winters in St. Petersburg, Florida, and recording and editing German folk music. His passion for the Medical Profession was only surpassed by his commitment and devotion to family. Surviving him are: - his loving wife , Rosemarie; they were married for 65 years! - his three sons: Robert, John and Fred - his daughters-in-law: Anne, Maureen, and Mary Ellen - his six grandchildren: Peter, Erivae, Bridgette, Jennifer, John, and Mark We celebrate this wonderful and remarkable man as an inspiration and affirmation of life itself. We will always be indebted to him in so many ways, and are blessed to be able to call him "Dad". Late in his life Dr. Haas wrote an engaging and inspiring account of his remarkable experiences. His autobiography, "My Story: A Personal Testament" is available on Amazon.com There will be a viewing at A. H.
