Paul F. Reed passed away on Thursday February 15, 2018 at his home, that he had built in the Village of Grosse Pointe Shores, at the age of 90. Paul was born on June 10, 1927 in Detroit to Herbert and Dorothy Reed. Paul was a longtime resident of the Village of Grosse Pointe Shores. Paul was an accomplished man, quick of wit, intelligent and affable. He was the rock of his family and helped everyone to a better life. He served our country in the United States Navy during WWII as a naval pilot. Earning the G. I. Bill, Paul attended Western Michigan University, Colgate University, and he earned his Bachelors of Engineering Degree from Wayne State University. It was there that he met Harriet Distler, Miss DSR and later married her for life. As an engineer Paul was a proprietor of his own business, Reed Bearing & Equipment Company, located on Mack Avenue. He was the national distributor for Heim Bearings and sales representative for many other bearing and equipment manufacturers. In his free time Paul enjoyed golfing and traveling. He traveled extensively through Europe and the Carribean. He had even flown on the Concord Express Jet and played golf at St. Andrews in Scotland. Having been a pilot in the Navy he would rent small planes and take to the sky. Paul was a very handy-man. He built his home in the Village in 1964, and moved in the home in 1965. He performed all of his own home repairs and service on his vehicles. While he was busy tinkering and repairing he may have been singing some old barbershop tunes as he was a singer in a quartet. He was also a member of the Engineering Society of Detroit and the Players Club and would occasionally perform onstage. In the summer he enjoyed spending time at Higgins Lake with his family appreciating the beauty of Northern Michigan by boating and fishing. In Fall and Winter they would head up to Grayling for some fun filled snowmobiling or skiing. In his neighborhood he was a long time member of the Sociable Scoundrels Group and shared many a laugh with the Scoundrels. Rumor has it that the group is still socializing across the nation to this day. Paul is the beloved husband of the late Harriet who passed away on April 19th of 2016 at the family home. Loving father of his son, P. Bradford, (Susan DeSalvo-Reed). His dear daughters, Julie Ann, (Scott Myers) Reed, and Karen Reed. The dear Grandfather of 4, Colton, Ryan, Rachel and Jonathan. Cherished great-grandfather of 3, Hailey, T.J., and Audrey. Paul was preceded in death by his parents Herbert and Dorothy, and siblings, Lawrence and Pat Reed. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 from 3:00 PM until the time of service 6:00 PM at the A. H.
