Peter Phillips was born September 21, 2017 in Detroit, Michigan to Michael and Mercine Phillips. He was an active member in the Metro-Detroit community, graduating from Eastern High School where he was classically trained in music. He passed away October 15, 2017 at the age of 89 surrounded by his loving family. As talented musician, Peter preformed professionally as a soloist and concert violinist. In addition to the violin he learned to play the mandolin and was a wonderful singer. He was a faithful servant of God and used his amazing talents to serve his Church and his community as a choir director at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church from 1954 until 1960, and at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church from 1960 to 2004, for 51 years of total service between both churches. He continued to be an active member holding the position of Director Emeritus. Peter also served as the president of the Mid-Eastern Federation of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians (MEFGOX) from 1989 to 1992. For his service to MEFGOX he was awarded Patriarch Athenagoras Distinguished Service Medal. Family and faith were the most important things to Peter. He adored his children and grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to spend time with his family. He enjoyed listening to classical music and was often found playing Greek folk music with family and friends. Throughout his life Peter became a part of many families in addition to his cherished natural family. From the people he worked with, to the churches he attended, everyone considered him family and he always welcomed them with a caring smile and a warm heart. Peter joins in heaven, his parents, Sister Emily and his beloved wife of 39 years Ruth. He leaves behind his caring wife Toula of 25 years. His children Mercine Phillips, Arthur (Loretta) Phillips, and step-daughter Nicole (Kevin) Moore. Grandchildren Michael, Jared, Alex, Diane, Mary and Tess, and 6 great-grandchildren. He will also be missed by his 4 nieces and nephews, a large extended family and many friends.
