

Richard Thomas “Rick” Young passed away on May 11, 2026, at the age of 78. Born in Detroit on December 10, 1947, he was the beloved son of Earl and Virginia Young. Rick grew up spending time with his family, and had especially fond memories of being at Mamaw’s house on Longview. Rick graduated from Notre Dame high school then went on to earn his undergraduate degree from Wayne State University. After graduation, he went on to receive his Master’s Degree in Hospital Administration from Columbia University. He built a successful career a Hospital Administrator at several hospitals, including Riverside Osteopathic Hospital, Detroit Riverview Hospital, and South Macomb Hospital.
Rick loved entertaining family and friends, he was known for his passion for cooking and sharing wonderful meals. He especially loved fishing and spending time on the water with treasured friends John Rondi and Bob Dawson. An avid reader with a thoughtful and compassionate nature, he always seemed to know the right thing to say during both joyful and difficult times. Throughout his life, he formed countless friendships and touched many lives.
Above all, Rick was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle. He rarely missed his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, school plays, and special moments. He will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving him.
Rick is survived by his loving wife, Mary. He was incredibly proud of his children, who affectionately called him “Pops”: Wendy (Nick) Lyon, Kristy (Bryan) Wilson, Rebecca (Don) Lavine, Kelly (Pat) Shanley, and Christian (Kathy Foley) Rowe. He adored his grandchildren Kayla (Mychael), Jake, Reese, Sarah, Brie, Lauren, Rhett, Ashley, and Alivia, and was the cherished great-grandfather of Jett and Lana. He also leaves behind his loving sister, Karen (Glenn) Walters, niece Lauren (Jason), and nephew Patrick (Angela).
A memorial gathering will be held on Friday, May 15, from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 12:30 p.m. at A.H. Peters Funeral Home.
