Robert Waters

Robert A. Waters of St. Clair Shores and formerly the city of Grosse Pointe passed away on Saturday, January 24th after a brief illness. He was born in Indianapolis, IN to Arthur Marquis Waters and Irene Lewis on September 23, 1917. The family lived in Butte, MT, Boise, ID and Salt Lake City, Utah before returning to Indianapolis. Robert attended Indiana University, earning a degree in business, then passed the CPA Exam. He worked for Arthur Anderson Accounting firm in Chicago. He married Catherine M. Metzger on Valentine's Day 1942. They were married 71 years. Robert was an officer in the Navy and was sent to the "90 Day Wonder" School for the supply corps. He was stationed in San Diego, Minneapolis, and Boston. After the war he earned a law degree at DePaul University in Chicago. Still working for Arthur Anderson, he was transferred to Seattle. Then he took a position with American Natural Gas Company in Detroit. He was treasurer of the Michigan-Wisconsin Pipeline Co. then Vice President of finance of American Natural Holding Company, retiring in 1982. The board of trustees of College Hospital asked him to become a member where he helped negotiate the purchase of Belmont Nursing Home. He was involved with the building of the Muir Road addition to Cottage Hospital. Robert was active in St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Grosse Pointe Woods where he was on the finance committee and a member of the vestry. Participating in the bowling and golf activities of the Senior Men's Club of Grosse Pointe was his pleasure. He is survived by his son Arthur of Barcelona, Spain and Daughter Eleanor Garzel of Grosse Pointe Woods, and grandchildren Michael of Chicago, Dr. Laura of Woodland, CA. and Julia Waters of Seattle. Also surviving is his sister Helen Rawls of Tempe, AZ, and brother Lewis Waters of Springfield OH. A memorial service will be held for Robert, Saturday January 31st at 2pm at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 20475 Sunningdale Park, Grosse Pointe Woods. Memorial Contributions can be made to St. Michael's Episcopal Church.
