

Sam W. Thomas, age 89, died peacefully at home on July 23, 2014. Sam was born in Fayetteville, Tennessee on September 23, 1924, the son of George and Naomi Thomas. Sam was one of seven children. His family moved to the Detroit area during the Depression years. Sam was a graduate of Cass Technical High School in Detroit and Wayne State University. He earned his Jurist Doctorate in 1951 from Wayne State. Sam took time out of his educational year to serve his country during World War II. He was a crew member on a B-25 bomber in the Army Air Corp and saw service in the India, Burma, China Theater. After his discharge in 1945, he returned home to continue his education. In 1948 he married Wynn Thompson and started his family. Sam began his storied legal career at Michigan Mutual Insurance. It was there that he met his second wife, Virginia, whom he later married in 1954. His practice centered on plaintiff cases involving worker's compensation and industrial negligence. Much of his work was related to the various building trades unions. In the early 1960's he joined the firm of Feikens, Dice, Sweeney & Sullivan and continued his practice built on worker's rights. In the early 1970's he started his own firm, Sam W. Thomas, P.C. He was an active attorney up to his death. Mr. Thomas was a former member of the Detroit Yacht Club, the Detroit Golf Club and the Michigan Bar Association. He enjoyed golf, travel, reading and his family. He was known as a historical buff. Sam is survived by his sons, Mark S. Thomas and J. Scott Thomas (Judy); two grandchildren, Jessica and Michael; and his sister, Georgie Maday. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, many extended family members and his caregiver, Monica Brazell. Sam was predeceased by his wife, Virginia; his parents, his daughter-in-law, Patricia; and his siblings, Alice, Sara, Margaret, Giles and William. The funeral for Sam W. Thomas will begin at 12 noon Saturday, August 2, 2014 at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods. Rev. Rob Freshour, pastor of First Baptist Church of South Lyon will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday and Friday, July 31 and August 1, 2014.
