Former Grosse Pointe Woods resident Sue Coutilish, 91, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2018. Sue was the beloved wife of the late George Coutilish and loving mother of the late John Coutilish. She is survived by her children, Cynthia Gray-Howey, Pamela Coutilish, Peter (Christine), John's widow Theresa, Theodore (Mary Beth Langan) and Stacy (James Faremouth) and grandchildren Jason, Paul, Benjamin, Alexis, George, Sydney, Alexandria, Susan, Andrew and Lauren. Also survived by many loving extended family members and friends. Sue Velas was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, on Aug. 13, 1926. She and her parents, James and Theodora, and four siblings, George, Harry, Gus and Irene, moved to Detroit in the 1940s. She managed a bakery in Detroit before marrying George in 1960. They moved to Grosse Pointe Woods in 1969 where they raised their family. After George retired, Sue and George moved to the last home they shared on Lake Shannon in Fenton. They spent many happy years hosting family and friends on the lake. Sue later moved to Rochester Hills to be closer to family and then lived her final years after a stroke at ShorePointe Nursing Home in St. Clair Shores. Sue was very proud of her Greek heritage and loved her family and friends at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, where she met the love of her life, George. She spent many years cooking and baking for her family. Her specialties were stuffed grape leaves, Greek meatballs, Greek spaghetti, baklava and rice pudding. Many of these were worth fighting for! Memorial donations to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church would be welcomed.
