

After a long and courageous battle with depression, Timothy John Briggs succumbed to this disease on August 18, 2017 at the age of 51 in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan. Timothy was born July 25, 1966 in Ann Arbor, Michigan to John and the late Madeline (Yaros) Briggs. On July 13, 1991 he married Cheryl Sokolowski. Surviving are his wife, Cheryl; two sons, Kenton and Aidan; father John and his wife Esther (Donald-Briggs), sister Laura and her husband Dr. Paul (Drouillard) two nephews Max and Jake, brother-in-law Thomas Sokolowski and nephew Andrew. He was preceded in death by his mother Madeline and father-in-law Jerry Sokolowski. Timothy grew up in Bay City and Alpena, Michigan. He attended Alpena Community College and graduated from Oakland University. After obtaining a Masters Degree from Eastern Michigan University, he returned to Oakland University as a Special Lecturer in the Department of Writing and Rhetoric since 1995. He continued teaching while pursuing a Doctorial Degree at Bowling Green State University until the time of his illness. In 2007 he received the 2007 Excellence in Teaching Award at Oakland University and the 2011 Kairos Teaching Award. Timothy was a gifted and talented artist, musician, and writer. He loved teaching and was an inspiration to his students and in turn was inspired by them. Most of all he was a loving and devoted husband and father. He thoroughly enjoyed being a stay at home dad when the kids were young. His presence will long be remembered by those whose lives he touched on his journey through life. Memorial visitation will take place on Thursday, August 24, 2017 from 3:00-8:00 PM with a 7:00 PM chapel service at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home at 20705 Mack Avenue, Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, donations appreciated for their sons' college education payable to Cheryl Brigg's, through the funeral home.
