W. Tom ZurSchmiede Jr.

W. Tom ZurSchmiede, Jr. died peacefully at home amid his family on May 5, 2017. He was born to Elsie and W. Tom ZurSchmiede on July 31, 1926, in New Albany, IN and moved to Detroit at the age of 6. Mr. ZurSchmiede served as Chief Executive Officer of Federal Screw Works from 1970 to 2002 and was Chairman for the 39 years preceding his death. After serving with the US Army in the Western Pacific at the end of World War II, Mr. ZurSchmiede graduated from the University of Michigan in 1948 and its graduate school of business in 1950. A CPA, he was employed by Ernst & Ernst, Certified Public Accountants from 1950 to 1953, and then joined Federal Screw Works, serving in sales and general management. Mr. ZurSchmiede was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, the Society of Automotive Engineers, Lochmoor Club, and the Renaissance Club. He attended Grosse Pointe Memorial Church for 79 years and was active in its affairs. He was also active in the affairs of the U.S. fastener industry and Sigma Chi Fraternity at the University of Michigan. Military history was his hobby, but his principal interest outside his family was the Company. He never tired of it. His principal aims were to keep it independent and protect the jobs of its employees. He was also a devoted fan of the Detroit Tigers and the University of Michigan football team. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Helen; four children, W. Tom III (Delle Jean), Robert F. (Elizabeth), Janet (Mrs. Craig A. LaPine), and Kathryn (Mrs. Paul D. Groesbeck); 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Janet (Mrs. Hugh G. Harness). Visitation Saturday May 13th 1:00 pm until time of service 2:00 pm at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, 16 Lakeshore Road, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI 48236. Reception to follow at Lochmoor Country Club in Grosse Pointe Woods. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to The Capuchins, 1820 Mt. Elliott Street, Detroit, MI 48207-3485.
