

Stephens, David Lloyd: Passed away peacefully at St Joseph’s Health Centre in Guelph on Sunday, January 12, 2014 in his 79th year, surrounded by his loving family after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. David was born in Worcester England, on February 6, 1935 and was the son of the late Arthur Geoffrey Stephens and Elsie (Lloyd) Stephens. David is survived by his loving wife Gillian; his daughter Melanie, her husband Larry Wilson, and their three children Christen, Michael and Katelyn: his son Geoffrey Stephens, his wife Julianna (Bolzon), and their three children David, Ryan and Scott; his daughter Alison, her husband Jim Kelly, and their three children Megan, Colin and Emma; and his son Dr Micheal Stephens, his wife Pamela (Sharp), and their two children Jackson and Grace. Dave is also survived by his sister Jean Price, and brother in law Ken, nieces Nichola and Susanne and nephew Nigel. Dave came to Canada as a young man at the age of 17. It was during one of his return trips from England that he met the love of his life, Gillian. They were married 6 months later and have shared 53 years of marriage. He traveled across western Canada doing farming work, then returned to Toronto Ontario and was employed by the department of Highways as a surveyor. He quickly became a project supervisor, moved to St Catharine’s and worked for the city. In 1967, David started his own construction company called DL Stephens, and later Stephens and Rankin Construction. In 1982 he acquired Capital Paving in Guelph, and turned it into one of the most recognizable construction companies in southern Ontario. He retired in 1998. Dave was a member of the Cutten Club in Guelph for many years. Dave and Gill also enjoyed many winters in Naples Florida and golf at Eagle Creek. Dave will be resting at the Gilbert MacIntyre and Son Funeral Home, Hart Chapel, 1099 Gordon Street, Guelph Ontario. Visitation will be on Wednesday, Jan 15 from 7pm to 9pm, and on Thursday Jan 16 from 1pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm. A celebration of Dave’s life will be held at the funeral home on Friday Jan 17, 2014 at 11 a.m. Reception to follow at the Cutten Fields Golf Club at 190 College Avenue East, Guelph. Family Flowers only. Donations in David’s name to the St Joseph’s Health Center in Guelph or the Alzheimer’s Association Guelph-Wellington would be greatly appreciated by the family. The family would like to thank Dave’s golfing buddies at the Cutten Club and Eagle Creek for their support. We would also like to extend our thanks to friends that have been there for Dave and Gill throughout this lengthy illness. A special and heartfelt thank you to the nursing staff on Magnolia and Mapleview floors at St Josephs for the wonderful and compassionate care given to Dave during his stay, your kindness will never be forgotten.
Family will receive friends at the Hart Chapel on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 from 7-9 p.m and again on Thursday, January 16, 2014 from 1-4 & 7-9 p.m. A Service of Remembrance will be held in the Hart Chapel on Friday, January 17, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow at the Cutten Club
