It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Edward (Ted/Ed) Christie on Nov. 29th at the age of 93 in his own home. He was the loving husband of Helen, nee Kurtz for 73 years. Devoted father of Bonnie (Ray) Bolton and Wendy (Grant) Drohan. Cherished Papa of Jeremy (Amy), Robert (Rebecca), and Nicole Bolton; and Christopher (Holly), Matthew (Vicki) and Aaron Drohan. Proud great Papa of Charles, Henry, Ruth, Thomas; Tyson, Hunter, Charlotte; Ella, Jack, James; and Kaleah and Carson. Dear brother of the late Lindsay, Gary (Wynne), Kurt (Sandy), Noel (late Fran), and Paul (Nadia) Christie. Son of the late Lindsay, Sr. and Mildred Christie. Dear brother-in-law to Vincent Kurtz (late Grace).
Ted was born in Guelph and as the eldest son of the family, he took that responsibility seriously, working diligently at everything from raising chickens, delivering papers and telegrams, and doing farm labour to help supplement the family income during the Great depression. He trained through the Sea Cadets during WWII, hoping to serve his country, but was unable to serve formally before the war ended.
Family was always the utmost priority for Ted. Regular visits to his grandparents, parents, parents-in-law, and other relatives took precedence until they had passed. He delighted in his grandchildren and was proud of their many accomplishments. Ted was a strong presence in the lives of all family members and remained so until his passing, loved unconditionally by all of us. We were blessed to have known such a strong and gentle soul.
Over the years, he worked at Knight Lumber and then at Federal Wire in the Stock Room until he, along with his brothers, founded Fastforms – a printing company in Guelph. His hobbies included beer and wine making, card playing, golfing, harmonica, and fishing – especially with his grandson, Rob. He was also known to place the occasional $2 bet on the ponies.
After marrying the love of his life, Helen, 73 years ago, he built the home that he raised his daughters in and continued to live there until his passing. Forever his soulmate and confidant, he was devastated when Helen passed earlier this year. May all who loved Ted find solace in the fact that he now joins her eternally. Ted and Helen shared many adventures, especially in their retirement, spending a great deal of time in Florida, Branson, and traveling overseas. Ted continued to help out family in his retirement, too, doing yard work and odd jobs as long as he was able to.
Church was an important part of his life. Ted and Helen belonged to St. Joseph’s Parish since 1953, and they did volunteer work with the Church in various capacities until COVID-19 hit hard.
We would like to thank Dr. Julie Chaytor for her excellent and sensitive care and for advocating on his behalf. Also, for all of the family and friends who were willing to step up with offers of help, prayers, and compassion. We also want to thank Care Partners, Bayshore, and Bloom for the tremendous amount of support we received through E.D.I.T.H. (Expected Death in the Home) that allowed us to accommodate Dad’s request to pass in comfort.
Resting at Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Funeral Home, Dublin Chapel, 252 Dublin St N, Guelph. Visitation will take place at St. Joseph's Church, 409 Paisley Rd, Guelph, on Tuesday December 6, 2022 from 10:00-11:00am, with a Funeral Mass to follow at 11am. Private interment will be held at a later date.
In Dad’s memory, contributions to Sick Kids Hospital, St. Joseph’s Health Centre or, if desired, simply doing a kind deed for someone would be appreciated. Donations can be made at the funeral home or online at www.gilbertmacintyreandson.com.
