July 19, 1943 – November 6, 2023
Loving and devoted wife of the late David George Harley Gray (February 3, 2010) for almost 40 years. Proud mother of Laura – Glen Sclater (Stephen) of Barrie, Dr. Heather Elizabeth Gray of Claremont, David Austen Gray of Guelph and Michael Alan Gray of Guelph – Eramosa. “Grandma Chief” to Connor and Muskoka Sclater, and Kieran, Harkin and Carys Porter. Former mother-in-law to Dr. Danielle Thornton. Predeceased by her parents Doris Glen (Mahoney) Austen and Ernest Henry (Harry) Austen. Also by Harley’s parents Besse Eleanor Matthews Gray and Garnet Gray and by his siblings and their spouses: Carol Gray, Laurine Zecca (Erminio), Marion Dron (Herb), Estelle Ferraro (Moe), Norma Jackson (Don), Willa McAdorey (Bob), Elkins (Al) Gray (Ginger). Liz will be remembered by Harley’s nieces and nephews and by her Austen and Mahoney Cousins.
Liz was a retail pharmacist for over 30 years. She worked for her Dad at Austen’s Drug Store and then Zellers. She also did relief work in several stores. After she retired in 1997 she and Harley annually spent 5 ½ months at their cottage on Middle Doe Lake near Burk’s Falls. They visited every province except Newfoundland and spent 3 weeks in Florida at Daytona Beach and North Redington Beach, usually for their Valentine’s Day wedding anniversary. Harley was a leap year baby so every 4 years there was usually a special celebration. Harley and Liz were the first Block Parents in Guelph. Her biggest disappointments were the demolition of the Carnagie Library, the closing of St. George’s School on King Street and the closing of Guelph Daily Mercury. She grew up on Woolwich St., when it was highway 6 and 7, lived on Arthur St. N., for 53 years and ended up on Highway 6 again when Mike kindly invited her to move in with him. For many years she sewed her own clothes. She was a big fan of trains and enjoyed following players of the Guelph Teams (Hockey and Baseball). She was a proud Guelphite and lifelong member of Dublin Street United Church (4th generation).
At Elizabeth’s request there will be no visitation or service. Thank you Dr. Yazid, Dr. Lund and Dr. Ruddock.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep
I am the thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight
I am the soft stars that shine at night
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there. I did not die.
