WALCOT, John A. - John 'The Dude' Walcot passed away peacefully in his sleep at Guelph General Hospital on Thursday, July 22, just 10 days after his 94th birthday. To say that Dude loved and supported his family is an understatement. John’s beloved wife Nancy (nee Onions) has been by his side, physically and emotionally for over 69 years of marriage. His legacy can be found in his children Ann Hucal and her husband Richard, sons Peter with his better half Jodi Moore, Robert and his wife Elma and youngest child Bradley. John was an ultra-proud Grandfather to Amy (Tom Fuke), Thomas, Jessica and Jaden, and a Great Grampa to Claire.
John was born in Montreal on July 12, 1927 and grew up in downtown Toronto. Much of his life revolved around playing and watching sports. The proudest moment of his own sporting life came when he was truly the hero in the North Toronto Norseman’s City High School Championship game in front of 20,000 spectators at Varsity Stadium in 1944, an event he celebrated with his teammates for 75 years. John was also a proud alumni of Queen’s University where he played varsity sports and earned a Business Degree. A couple of years after graduating, this “city boy” made the unlikely choice to join New Holland Farm Equipment, where he enjoyed a successful 40-year career that saw his family live across the country.
Dude’s love of his kids and grandchildren was best seen as he supported us in person at literally thousands of games, recitals and events over the course of many decades. We’re pretty sure that the folks at New Holland weren’t aware of just how many business trips he arranged around our game schedules - that secret is ours.
Those that knew John know just how much he loved to laugh, and more than that how much he enjoyed making others around him laugh. Nobody will be surprised to know that his wit and sarcasm was with Dude right to his final days with us. A lot of people loved John Walcot and for good reasons. He was always a passionate supporter of the teams, organizations and communities he was part of, and while he made friends quickly he was a loyal friend to countless others for all of his years with us.
The Walcot clan would like to thank the staffs at Guelph General and particularly those at The Village at Arbour Trails for helping make John’s final days and years with us just as good as possible. We already miss him more than words can say, but we also know that when you think about your time with John, Dad, Dude or Grampa you will have memories that make you smile.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2021 from 10-12 p.m. at the Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Funeral Home, 1099 Gordon Street, Guelph. A funeral service will be held that day at 2:00pm. To RSVP for the visitation and service, please use the RSVP button on the funeral home website.
Those who wish to make a donation in John’s memory are invited to support Autism Ontario or the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Online donations and condolences can be made at www.gilbertmacintyreandson.com.
