

Swidinsky, Robert October 6, 1936 - October 19, 2014 Died peacefully at home, surrounded by family, after a brave struggle with cancer. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Oksana, his children and grandchildren. Robert lived a full and varied life. Born near Rossburn, Manitoba on a farm that lacked electricity and running water, Robert made his way from being taught at a one room rural school house to studying Commerce at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario. After 4 years of active service as a Naval Lieutenant, he decided to return to civilian life and completed his PhD in Economics at the University of Minnesota. For a brief period of time, he was a faculty member in the Department of Economics at the University of British Columbia but soon moved to the University of Guelph where he spent the rest of his career as a Professor of Economics, specializing in Labour Economics. Robert will be remembered for his joy in singing and playing folk and country songs, for tinkering at his cottage, for his love of picking raspberries and for his devotion to his family. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 25th at 10:00am at the Holy Protection Ukrainian Catholic Church, 115 York Road, Guelph, Ontario, followed by a light luncheon. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation to Prostate Cancer Canada (www.prostatecancer.ca/donate/ways-to-donate) would be appreciated. A Funeral Mass will be held at the Holy Protection of the Mother of God Ukrainian Catholic Church, 115 York Rd., Guelph, on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at 10:00a.m. Cremation to follow.
