

David W. Harvey was born in Murphysboro Ill., on Dec. 2, 1939, the beloved son of the late LaWanda L. (Young) and James W. Harvey. He passed away on Monday, Jan. 23, 2012. David graduated from Murphysboro Township High School in 1957. At Southern Illinois University he earned a bachelor of science and master of arts degrees in history. In 1964 he entered the U.S. Air Force via Officer Training School. Lt. Harvey's first assignment took him to Giebelstadt Air Base, West Germany, where he served as supply and transportation officer. After three years in Germany he was transferred to Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, where Capt. Harvey performed duty as a Minuteman Missile combat crew commander from 1968 to 1970. After leaving active duty Mr. Harvey joined the Air Force Reserve, serving initially as a public relations officer and then as a historian. While Lt. Col. Harvey was assigned to Strategic Air Command at Offutt Air Force, Neb., as a historian, he researched and wrote "Seventy Years of Strategic Air Refueling, 1918-1988," published by the Air Force in 1990. Attached to the 126th Air Refueling Wing at O'Hare Field for monthly training, Harvey wrote a history of that unit for the Illinois Air National Guard. Lt. Col. Harvey retired from the Air Force in 1992. In 1970 Mr. Harvey accepted a position as social studies teacher at Downers Grove South High School. He taught there for 32 years, retiring in 2002 and moving to Lindenhurst, Ill. All during his lifetime Mr. Harvey enjoyed music and the arts. At the age of 12 he sang with the Columbus Boys Choir in Chautauqua, N.Y. While in high school he played trombone in the school band and the Murphysboro Community Band, sang in the school chorus and acted in school plays. In college David sang with the S.I.U. Glee Club. He also sang with church choirs and community choruses wherever he lived, including the Viking Park Singers of Gurnee. Mr. Harvey was a member of the United Protestant Church of Grayslake along with his wife, Suzanne. There he sang with the church's Chancel Choir. David is survived by his wife, Suzanne; two daughters, Shannon (Michael) Carroll of Villa Park and Colleen (Andrew) Thomas of Palatine; four nephews and nieces; two stepchildren, Nanette (James) Vanderventer and John Susman; one grandchild, Isabella Thomas; two stepgrandchildren, Mattaius and Simone Susman; and three sisters, Winifred Harvey of Addison, Jama Triner of LaGrange and Barbara Carter of Alton. He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Mary Louise Harvey and Virginia Harvey of Murphysboro, Illinois, and one nephew, Grant Triner. Visitation will he held on Friday, Jan. 27, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Marsh Funeral Home, 305 N. Cemetery Road, Gurnee. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 10 a.m. at United Protestant Church, 54 S. Whitney, Grayslake, with interment to follow at North Shore Garden of Memories, North Chicago, Ill. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Save-A-Pet, 31664 N.
