

Vera graduated at the top of her class from Waukegan Township High School in 1950. She enjoyed her 60-year career as a paralegal and was always active in the local community. She was on the board of directors for Happy Day Nursery School and was instrumental in their expansion. Other notable organizations included the American Business Women’s Association, Holy Family Soup Kitchen, Illinois Association of Legal Secretaries and many more. Her passions included traveling far and near, cooking for everyone, sports, and continually learning new hobbies and skills.
She was preceded in death by her siblings Robert Dela Peña, Richard Dela Peña, Dolores Dela Peña and Charles Dela Peña.
She is survived by her 5 loving children, Alex R. Hernandez Jr., Roberta Hernandez, Tony (Nellie) Hernandez, Ron (April) Hernandez and Regina (Tom) Agos; 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Her family will always remember her strength, guidance, encouragement, smile, tamales, her practical caring as well as her deep dedication and love for family and friends.
Family and friends are invited to the Visitation on Monday, March 14 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Marsh Funeral Home in Gurnee, IL. Visitation will resume Tuesday, March 15 at 10:00 a.m. and services will start at 11:00 a.m. with burial to follow at Ascension Cemetery in Libertyville, IL.
