

George John Pilafas, 88, of Loganville, Ga. formerly of San Diego, Ca, Phoenix, Az, and Waukegan, Il., passed away on October 22, 2015 in Decatur, Georgia. He was born on September 7, 1927 in North Chicago, Il. to Galenos John and Athanasia Dracos Pilafas. George was the last surviving member of the group that donated the lot at Glen Flora & North Ave. where the previous church was built. His father was one of the original founding charter members of St. Demetrios in 1929. George was a life-long member of Glen Flora Country Club. He was also active in AHEPA and was the District 13 Secretary. After moving to California, he and Iris opened Pacific General Realty which became one of the largest real estate firms in San Diego. In 2004, the entire family relocated to Atlanta, Ga. George was an avid Cub fan since 1937 when he went to his first game and was thrilled to see the team do so well this year. He is survived by his son, Fr. John Galenos Pilafas of Chicago/Waukegan, Il.; and daughters, Elaine Pilafas of Lawrenceville, Ga., Georganne Pilafas of Snellville, Ga. and Athanasia (Paul) Pilafas Millward of Snellville, Ga. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Demetre (Anna), Chris, Andrew, Andrea (Luke), Nicolas, Tasia and Natalie; great-grandfather of Alexandra, Alexis and Landon; and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents; and adoring sisters, Helen, Irene and Tessie; nephew, Nick Phillips and his wife Iris Jane Pilafas in 2012. Visitation will be Friday, October 30, from 4 to 8 pm, at Marsh Funeral Home, Gurnee, Ill, with a byzantine music tribute at 6:30 pm and with trisagion at 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Waukegan, on Saturday October 31, 2015 at 11:00 am, with Fr. Louis Christopulos (nephew), Fr. Cosmas Halekakis and several other clergy presiding. Interment: Northshore Garden of Memories. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Demetrios Church, 1400 O'Plaine Rd, Libertyville, ILL. 60048. George is now with Christ, The Theotokos and his beloved St. George.
