William N. Byers

Bill Byers, 81 of Gurnee IL, passed away on Sunday March 15th, 2015. Bill was born on April 20th, 1933 in Zeigler, IL.

Bill retired from the United States Navy in 1973 with over 20 years of service, a veteran in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired from Gillette (P&G) in 1995.

He enjoyed his hobby of attending and showing his many Akitas at dog shows across the Midwest with his wife Mary in the 1970's and 80's and was active in local Akita clubs at the time. He had a passion for dogs and owned many throughout his life and one of his favorite was his last dog and friend, Charlie, who kept him company until the end.

Bill was an avid golfer in his retirement, enjoyed playing cards at the Warren Township Senior Center and was a die-hard St. Louis Cardinal fan all his life.

Survivors include his sister Edith Engel of Oak lawn IL, his children, Carol (Tom) Mahon of West Jefferson OH and Ed (Maryann) Byers of Beach Park IL.

Grandchildren, Zach and Kate Mahon and Sam and Dean Byers. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary L Byers, his parents and two sisters and one brother.

Visitation 1:00 - 2:00pm at Marsh Funeral Home in Gurnee.

Memorial Service is at 2:00pm on March 29, 2015.

Burial will be private.
