He is survived by his beloved wife, Naomi (nee Gerber), and his devoted children, William M. Eichen, of Palo Alto, California and Dr. Ann Eichen Smolar, of Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania, and his loving grandchildren, Rayna, Benjamin, Hannah, Isaiah, Joshua and Zackary.
Dr. Eichen was born on February 10, 1933, in Brooklyn, New York, to Gertrude and Samuel Eichen. He was the youngest of four boys, Seymour, Martin and Leo, all of whom loved and were devoted to him. Dr. Eichen gave that same love and devotion to his wife , children, and grandchildren whom he unfailingly supported in their personal and professional endeavors.
Dr. Eichen received a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from the University of Michigan and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry, in 1957. From 1957 through 1958, he received a post-doctoral Public Health Service Research fellowship from the U. S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare Public Health Service (NIH). From 1958 to 1960, he served as a Captain in the United States Army Dental Corps. In 1960, he opened his dental office in Bogota, New Jersey, where he practiced dentistry for almost 40 years while also teaching physiology and clinical dentistry at the New York University’s Dental School. In 1972, he took his family to Israel so he could volunteer as a dentist at Kibbutz Zakim near Gaza.
For more than fifty years, Dr, Eichen was an active member of Congregation Beth Sholom (CBS) in Teaneck, N.J. where he sang in the choir, served as a trustee and as treasurer of the Men’s Club. In 1991 he was the Dinner Dance Honoree and in 2002 was honored by the State of Israel Bonds at CBS. .
Dr Eichen loved life and learning. He loved his family, his patients, his students, and his friends. He loved Israel, “his shul,” painting, playing tennis, racketball, and basketball, and most of all traveling with his wife Naomi of 62 years across the globe, beginning with their three month European honeymoon and ending in 2008, first in Israel to celebrate its 60th anniversary, and then in Poland, where they were able to find and visit the ”Shtetel,” Kenenich, the town of his mother’s birth. Dr. Eichen will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
