Born in Paterson, he lived in northern New Jersey nearly all his life and was active in numerous local civic and arts causes. George earned a B.S. from the University of Vermont and an M.S. from Stevens Institute of Technology. After learning to program mainframe computers in the early 1960s, he devoted his professional energy to the then-new field of data security and systems audit. He taught at Baruch College, Fairliegh Dickinson University and NYU, and his independent consulting business had clients including Fortune 500 companies and the U.S. Treasury.
A decades-long member of the ISACA professional group, he earned its Wasserman Award and President’s Awards from the NY and NJ chapters. Beginning with civil-rights activism in the 1960s, George was a proud supporter of progressive causes and Democratic Party candidates from Stevenson to Biden.
George devoted many efforts to Jewish heritage and the Jewish community, and was also a prolific amateur composer and lyricist. He never went a day without singing. An entertainer, sailor, gardener, actor, world traveler, amateur architect, lover of languages and history, public-speaker and raconteur, George was also a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by wife Fran of 53 years, son Jared, daughter-in-law Gwen Glazer and one grandson, as well as brothers Michael and Robert Harelick and numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and other relations.
Funeral services will be at 1 P.M. on Friday, September 23 at King Solomon Memorial Park in Clifton, NJ, followed by shivah observance by family and guests.
