Angela “Gram” Kavanaugh, age 89, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2016. Angela was born and raised in Cape Breton. Angela attended both the Holy Angels Academy and the Holy Redeemer Academy in Sydney before graduating from Teachers College in Truro. Angela was passionate about education and taught elementary school in several provinces across the country.
Angela was an avid traveler who loved taking in different arts and cultures. Very few things in the world delighted Angela more than live theatre. This was obvious to anyone who watched her face light up as she shared stories of her many trips to see Broadway plays in New York City.
Angela deeply believed in charity and helping the less fortunate. She volunteered for many different organizations but her most prized volunteering was with Youth Live where she tutored kids studying for High school completion. She also spent much of her spare time generously crocheting afghans for the homeless in Halifax.
Above all else, Angela loved her family and she wasn’t afraid to let friends, acquaintances, neighbours, or even complete strangers know it. There wasn’t a single person who met Angela that didn’t know how proud she was of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Angela adored spending time with her family in Halifax and at the family cottage in River John. She will be missed dearly.
Angela is survived by her daughters Bev (David) and Peggy (Lonnie); her grandchildren, Jill (Dylan), Andy, Jordan (Lauren), Lindsay (Heidi), and Michael (Carolyn); her great-grandchildren, Anna, Wyatt, Henry, and newborn Callum; her sisters, Dorothy, June, Rose, Mary, Betty, Theresa and her brother, Charlie. She was predeceased by her husband George, her parents Daniel and Madeline Yakimchuk, sister, Agnes, and brothers Richard and Danny.
Service will take place on Saturday, May 28 at 1:00pm at Cruikshank's Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax, NS, with the burial immediately following.
