It is with great sadness yet great joy for a life well lived (86 years), that the family of Brenda Eve (Macdougall) Fong announces her passing on April 21st, 2020. She passed away peacefully at the White Hills Long Term Care Centre. Born 1934 in Moncton, NB, she was the daughter of Ethel (Doble) Macdougall of Hemyock, England and Robert Macdougall of Cherryfield, NB. She grew up on the family farm in MacDougall Settlement, NB and attended a one room schoolhouse for grades one to eight. Following high school in Halifax while living with her Aunt Lorna and family, she graduated from The Moncton Hospital School of Nursing in 1955 becoming a registered nurse. There, she developed many close lifelong friendships and indeed, their class is celebrating their 65th anniversary later this year. Brenda returned to Halifax to work in The Children’s Hospital and completed her teaching certificate from Dalhousie University.
Brenda was a caring and compassionate wife, mother, and grandmother. She was happily married to her beloved husband, the late Bill Fong for forty-seven years until his untimely death in 2012. Together they started their family first having a daughter Jennifer and then a son Peter, the joys of their lives. Brenda is survived by her son Peter (Lise) of Rothesay, NB, son-in-law Frank (Courtney) of Calgary, grandchildren Jamie, Luke, Bruce and Melissa and nephews and several cousins as well as numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Along with her parents and husband Bill, Brenda is predeceased by her daughter Jennifer, her brother Bill, and sister-in-law Martha.
Brenda was a devoted member of The Presbyterian Church of St. David. She had a fulfilling life singing in the choir and volunteering her time and energy in various activities of the church. She was an avid gardener, loved studying history, and was very proud of her British heritage.
The family wishes to thank the staff and volunteers of White Hills LTC Centre, Hammonds Plains, NS. The loving care that was provided over the past eight years was exemplary.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Cruikshank’s Halifax Funeral Home (902-423-7295), 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax. A private family graveside burial will take place at MacDougall Settlement Cemetery. Due to restrictions on gatherings, a celebration of Brenda’s life will be held at a later date.
For those who wish, donations in Brenda’s memory to The Presbyterian Church of St. David or to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by her family. To place an online condolence, please visit www.cruikshankhalifaxfuneralhome.com
