It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our dear uncle, Clarence (Clary) Stanley Pope, 97, in the Veteran’s Memorial Hospital, Halifax, on November 29th. Born in Halifax, Clary was the son of the late Stanley and Hazel (Dauphinee) Pope.
He was a Veteran of WW2 serving in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, Princess Louise’s, 10th Infantry Brigade from 1941 to 1945. Clary saw action in France, Holland and Belgium and was shipped home to Canada in early 1945 after being wounded in action in Belgium.
After the war, Clary worked at the Halifax Dockyards in various Supervisory positions until his retirement in 1977. He was an avid crib player and played 3 or 4 times a week right up until the last couple weeks of his life. He had a great singing voice, a wonderful sense of humour and a zest for life we will always remember.
Clary is survived by a stepdaughter, Cathy Sarty and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two wives, Marion Ann (McCuish) Pope, Sheila (Pat) (Sarty) Pope, three sisters, Gladys Harnish, Madeline Barnes, Anita Murphy and a brother, Kenneth Pope.
We wish to thank the wonderful staff of 4 Eastwood, Camp Hill, for their care and support of Clary in his last year of life.
Visitation will be held 2-4 Sunday, December 4th at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St, Halifax. Funeral Mass to be held 10:30 am on Monday, Dec. 5th from St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 2267 Brunswick St, Halifax. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville.
