March 31, 1927 to May 12, 2018
It is with great love and sadness that we announce the passing of Edward Francis Hansen, Sr., on May 12, 2018, at the age of 91.
Ed was born in Halifax to the late John and Annie Hansen. He was predeceased by all his siblings: Fred, Raymond, Walter, Bill, Gerald, Honora, and Marie. He grew up attending St. Mary’s Boys School and was a parishioner at St. Mary’s Basilica and Canadian Martyrs Church.
Ed was a devoted family man who is survived by his beloved wife of almost 65 years, Joan (Clarke); their three children, Edward, Michael, and Joanne; his seven grandchildren, Sarah, Severine, Isaac, Jeremy, Allison, Jill, and Scott; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Ed was a member of the ILA Local 269 as a longshoreman, and served as union president during his career. He retired after 37 years, and enjoyed morning coffee with his close friends Gordon and Freddie for the next 25 years.
He was a wonderful dancer, especially in his youth. He spent his well-earned retirement doing the things he loved most: gardening, watching baseball, and observing neighbourhood happenings. He enjoyed telling tales, both true and tall, to his captivated grandchildren.
Ed was a humble man of integrity and faith who attended weekly Mass until his 90th year. Ed’s family meant everything to him, and he meant everything to them. He will be dearly missed.
