

Hartlen,Frank, 93, of Shubenacadie passed away March 15, 2015 at Camp Hill Veterans Building. Born in Dartmouth in Dec 1921, he was the son of the late William V and Alice (Bainbridge) Hartlen. Frank was predeceased by his wife and soulmate, Lorna (Greenough) Hartlen who passed away in 1988. He retired in 1980 from the Halifax International Airport where he was the Supervisor of Airfield Maintenance. After his retirement he concentrated on his family and his large vegetable garden in the summer which provided his family and neighbors with a bounty of food. Like most veterans of WWII he did not talk about the action that he saw overseas while in Italy, France and Holland. He was a member of the West Novies and his family was very proud that he was a member of the First Special Forces aka The Devil's Brigade which was just awarded the US Congressional Gold Medal. He was a member of the Shubenacadie Legion and received his 60 year bar with the Eastern Star Lodge. Frank is survived by his children, Janette (Donald) Kearns, Wellington, Michael (Charlene) Hartlen, Bedford, Stephen (Marie) Hartlen, Mount Uniacke, Margaret Hartlen, Dartmouth and Denise (Douglas) Brown, Carrolls Corner; grandchildren; Sean Kearns, Kelsey and Tyler Brown; Devon and Thomas Hartlen and Ryan Hartlen, and great-grandchildren; Seamus and Lochlan Kearns. He is also survived by brother, Arthur (Audrey) Hartlen, sisters-in-law, Marie and Marie; brother-in-law, Wendell Turple and many nieces and nephews. Frank was predeceased by siblings, Isabel, Elsie, Clarence, Lorne and Kenneth. Memorial service will be held Thursday, March 19 at 2 pm in St James Anglican Church, Shubenacadie. Rev. Lloyd Ripley and Rev. Cheryl Rafuse officiating. Burial in the spring. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the St James Anglican Church or a charity of choice. Special thanks to the nurses and staff of 5 East Garrison of Camp Hill for the care and compassion given to Dad and our family over the last five years and to the housekeepers who were there after Mom passed.
