COLLIER, Garfield Michael “Skip”

It is with great sadness, the family of Garfield Michael “Skip” Collier, announces his passing at Willow Hall, Dartmouth on March 7, 2018 at the age of 75. Born in Halifax, he was the only son of the late Captain Garfield and Cedella Collier.

Skip will be sadly missed by his wife of 56 years, Helen (Wells) and his 5 children; Michael (Julie) Collier, Paula (David) Carter, Heather (Ernie) Collier-Sampson, Susan Collier and Kimberley (Kyle) MacRoberts; also 13 grandchildren, Craig (Noma) Collier, Justin Collier, Amanda, Devyn and Haley Carter, Jessica (Aaron) Quinn, Brittany and Lauren Sampson, Cydney and Cassey Prime, Alicia, Conor, and Liam McVarnock, and 3 great-grandchildren, Kelsey and Hailey Collier-Drake and Ella Grace Quinn. Skip is also survived by brother-in-law, Neil Brodie, sisters-in-law, Georgina Scott, Colleen (Robert) Burgess, and Linda Coolen, and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his only sister, Florence Collier (Brodie).

Skip was a proud North ender working many years with Prudential Insurance Company of America, then proceeded with a career in promotional advertising with Atlantic Nova Specialty Advertising, Talbot, and eventually starting his own business, Collier Promotional Products Ltd. for over 25 years. His love for fishing, RV’ing, Classic Cars and most of all people, led him to serving on the board of numerous organizations, such as The Good Sams Club and Cumberland Good Sams Campers, and the Nova Scotia Salmon Association.

One of his pride and joy was the Classic Chevy Club of Nova Scotia which he along with his dear friend Gary Porter founded in February of 1981. In 2016, Skip was inducted into the Maritime Motorsports Hall of Fame for his competitive drag racing in the early 1960’s. Although he had a soft spot for 55-57 Chevy’s his proudest project was the restoration of his 1964 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible, prior to his illness.

Dear Family,

I met Skip for the 1st time at an Atlantic Chapter evening at the 5 Fishermen's restaurant.

It was my first visit to the Maritimes as President of SAAC/PPAC/PPPC.

Skip was very welcoming and made me feel at home. He mentored me on several occasions about the special character of Maritimers. I will always be grateful for his support.

He was a stalwart member of the Association - the industry will miss him.

My heartfelt sympathy to the Family. Skip made a difference.

Sincerely,

Kurt

Dear Helen and family,

Stephen and I are saddened to hear of Skip's passing. While we were your neighbours on Leaman St, we appreciated Skip's humour, his willingness to help out with anything he could and his love of classic cars! I still remember the big storm that blew over a tree that was on our lot to your garage roof. Though it should have been us to do the clean-up, he was out with the chainsaw to get sorted before we could even blink!
He was a lovely man, and we know that you will miss him greatly. He leaves behind a great legacy in his beloved family. Our prayers are with you as you mourn his passing.

Dear Helen and Family,
I am saddened to hear of my first cousin's passing. My late parents spoke so fondly of Skip over the years. He always seemed to wear a smile. The past few years have been very difficult for you all. I am glad to have attended Skip and Helen's 50th wedding anniversary several years ago. That is the happy image I am left with to remember him by.

Deepest condolences,
Wanda McDonald Webber

Sorry to hear of Skip's passing. The first time I met Skip was 49 years ago. He sold me my first car after just getting married. It was a 1953 Chevrolet, I loved that car. My thoughts are with you Helen and your family. Skip was a great guy and will be missed.
