Passed away peacefully after a short illness on July 3rd 2018. Son of George C. and Jeannette J Schmid, devoted husband to the late Maita Paradinas, mother of his two children, Andre (Sonia Sedivy) and Nancy (Charles Killin); and to the late Bernadette Coyle. Predeceased also by his daughter Nancy to his great sorrow. Proud grandfather to Laura (Peter Wieczorek), Emily, Ted, and Nicholas, and great grandfather of Michael and Adam.
George grew up in various spots on the US West Coast and studied chemistry at University of Southern California. Drafted into the American military, he served in postwar France where he met his beloved wife, Maita, when he offered her a seat at an outdoors opera. They moved to the United States, where he finished his education at Harvard University before heading north to Canada with their two children for a job as a professor of chemistry at the University of Toronto. He lectured around the world, from Kuwait to China. George’s passion for clarinet playing came to the fore during his retirement in Halifax where he was introduced to the vibrant amateur music community and made many dear friends. As the years passed, he took great pleasure in playing the role of a grumpy old man with cane, yet his friends and family knew he was generous and unassuming while always ready with a dry quip and keen to share a good tale. He is dearly missed.
Friends and family will gather to share stories and music on Saturday, July 7 at 3pm from Cruikshank's Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax.
