Gerald Steffen finished his earthly journey peacefully with family members by his side on September 8th at Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home. A life-long resident of Halifax, he was a son of the late George and Hazel (Burns) Steffen, with whom he is now reunited.
Whether he was known as Gerry, Dad, Grampy or Bucky, he was deeply loved by all those he left behind, including son Scott (Nicola) Steffen, daughter Donna (Ross) Maybee, cherished grandchildren Will and Alex Steffen, Tracie Maybee and great-grandson Carleton Maybee. Also left to mourn his loss are his caring siblings Jean Fenn and Wayne Steffen, sisters-in-law Linda Bayers and Yvonne Steffen and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Gerald was predeceased by his dear wife, Edie, and his companion Joan Oxner, as well as brother Doug (Sonny) Steffen.
A plumber by trade, Gerry was a proud award winning member and served on the executive of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union for many years, and in his younger days operated the Plumbers and Pipefitters Club on Gottingen Street. Gerry was always very generous with his time and talents, helping friends and family alike Gerry shed a tear when the old Sackville Downs was demolished, but as an avid hockey fan, he soon became a staunch supporter of Mooseheads, not missing many games in over 20 years. He especially enjoyed the southern visits and cruises with Scott and family in his retirement.
Visitation will be held at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax, on Wednesday, September 13 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm where a Celebration of Life will also be held on Thursday, September 14 at 2pm with Rev. Kevin Little officiating.
A special thanks goes out from the family to the attentive and caring staff of the 2nd floor at Saint Vincent’s, who did everything within their power to provide the best of care during Gerald’s final year.
