Gertrude was born January 27, 1932 in Halifax to W.G. and Lillian Coles, the youngest of eight children. She grew up in north end Halifax, attending Richmond School, Q.E.H., and Halifax Business Academy, graduating at 16. She went to work at Ben’s Bakery as an accounting clerk.
She married F.R. (Nick) Nickerson (deceased 2010) in 1951. When Nick retired, they spent winters in Panama City Beach, Florida and summers in Petite Riviere, Lun. Co. They participated in the Bridgewater and Lunenburg Farmers markets, selling vegetables, pickles and craft items. She loved to knit, crochet, play bridge and other card games.
Gertrude was a lifelong member of St. Mark’s Church, Halifax, and sang in the choir. She was an organizer, and held offices in AYPA, Mother’s Union, and ACW. She was also a Girl Guide leader for many years.
