James Tompkin Dollard

30 September , 193426 October , 2018

James Tompkin (Jim) Dollard, 84, passed away quietly on October 26, 2018.

Born in Canso on September 30, 1934, he was the son of the late Dorothy Odessa (Morris) and Walter William Dollard. He is survived by his daughter, Juanita (Henry), granddaughter, Alison, sisters Rosemary and Sally (Doug), and brother, Harry (Lillian) and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 42 years, Shirley; son, Chris; brothers Tom, Pat, Bill, Mac, Leslie, Francis (Bud), and Joe; and sister, Lillian.

Jim began his military career in Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry. He lied about his age to enroll and be able to send money home to his Mother. He completed Peace Keeping tours in Cypress, three Peace Keeping tours in Ismailia, Egypt, including a tour during the Suez Canal Crisis of 1956. He was part of the Convoys which closed Sardinia, Italy, when the British took over Canadian commitment in 1969, and Soest, Germany, when it was moved to Lahr. A serious injury while parachuting resulted in a transfer to the Service Corps where he was designated to transport visiting dignitaries to their destinations. Upon retirement from the regular Army, Master Corporal Dollard continued his service as a dispatcher at Willow Park, Halifax.

Jim was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He loved to laugh and valued the simple things in life: family, nature, fishing, and a good game of cards. In later life, he and Shirley discovered a social enjoyment in bowling. Jim will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on November 8 at 2pm at Cruikshank Funeral Home, Windsor St., with Pastor Darren presiding and Legion representation. Interment will be held at a later date. Family flowers only please.

In lieu of flowers and in memory of Jim, call a friend or relative you haven’t reached out to recently, visit a shut-in or nursing home resident, forgive someone, be kind to someone. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society Nova Scotia or St. Vincent Nursing Home.

Dear Bonnie & family, I am sorry to hear of your dad passing away. You & your family took very good care of your dad & had his best interests at heart. I just know he is proud of you. I will miss seeing your dad going for a walk & meeting him at the mailbox as he would emerge from the trees in your back yard to get the mail. Jim had quite a military record, we thank him for his service. Thinking of you at this difficult time & wishing you comfort & peace. Shelly L Billard
