On May 6, 2026 our mother, Judy, was reunited with her beloved husband Murray (Stan), her parents, Charles and Carolyn (Deal) Duggan and her siblings and their spouses, Joan and Gerald (Babe) Mills, William (Eric) and Kay Duggan and Dana and Paul Murray.
Mom was born and grew up in Halifax and attended Mount Saint Vincent Academy. Her summers were spent at her favorite place, the family cottage at Shad Bay. She worked at a bank before marrying Stan. For the first seven years of their marriage they lived in Halifax and had three children, Karen, Charles (Chuck) and Mark. Of course, home is where the Navy sends you and the West Coast soon became the family’s new home.
While living in Aldergrove and Victoria, BC Mom somehow managed to keep us kids all in check (no mean feat), kept the house in a manner that would make Martha Stewart look like a slacker and offered warm, East Coast, hospitality to all who came through the door. She was very creative and in her spare time she turned her hand to just about any craft and excelled at them all, crewel work, knitting, ceramics, tole painting, Ukrainian Easter egg decorating, quilting, sewing and water colour painting to name a few. Upon Dad’s reposting to Aldergrove, this time as Commanding Officer, Mom became a frequent hostess for innumerable dinners both at the Naval Station and at home. A role she took on with grace and ease.
Once again, the Navy had Mom packing and the family were posted to Ottawa and then (finally!) back home to Nova Scotia. They settled in a lovely house in Lakelands. Many memorable family get togethers, Christmases and birthdays were spent here with Mom once again in the role of consummate hostess. Eventually, Mom and Dad moved back to the city and their new apartment was now the scene for family gatherings. You knew you could drop by any time and there would always be a cup of tea and cookies to be had. The return to Nova Scotia also meant that Mom could spend time with her siblings and they made the most of it with fun filled dinner parties, lunch dates and vacations with all eight of them at the Quarterdeck.
Mom moved back to BC early in 2024 to be closer to two of her three children in her final years. She loved her children and granddaughters fiercely and they were her world.
She is survived by her daughter, Karen Salandini (Terry), Aldergrove, BC, sons, Charles (Shirley), Vancouver, BC and Mark (Sara), Carleton Place, ON; granddaughters Kate Salandini, Aldergrove, BC and Paige and Ava Stanley, Carleton Place, ON; and Aunt, Sister Virginia Deal, Halifax, NS along with many nieces and nephews.
Visitation at Cruikshank’s Halifax Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax on Wednesday, June 17th from 5-8pm. Funeral service, Thursday, June 18th at 10am at St. Agnes Church, 6903 Mumford Road, Halifax.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Chalice or a charity of choice would be appreciated.
