She is survived by mother Joan Chandler, stepmother Diana Chandler, brothers Michael Chandler (Emily), Andrew Chandler (Erin) and Martin Chandler (Deepti), sister Dr. Andrea Chandler (Derek), and nephews Freddy and Stuart Chandler-Baas.
Karen was predeceased by her grandparents, Bram and Dorothy Chandler, Graham and Mildred Millar; and by her father Dr. Brian Chandler.
Karen attended Gorsebrook School and Queen Elizabeth High School in Halifax. She received her post-secondary education from Dalhousie University, the University of British Columbia, and Harvard University, where she earned a Ph.d. in Mathematics in 1992. A brilliant mathematician, she specialized in algebraic geometry, specifically number theory. Her scholarly research results include eleven single-authored and four co-authored published articles in mathematics journals. She taught students at various institutions of higher learning, among them the University of Chicago, the University of Notre Dame, and the University of California at Riverside. She also spent a semester as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Université de Nice in France.
She will be remembered by former students, colleagues, research collaborators and friends in the United States, Canada and Europe. Possessed of a powerful soprano voice, she enjoyed singing in choirs, and performed a solo at her sister’s wedding in Ottawa. She loved dogs, and enjoyed the company of her golden Lab Corona for many years. Although brain cancer cut short her promising career, the mathematical problems that she solved will live on for all eternity.
A celebration of life will take place at 5:00 p.m. on June 4 2024 at Cruikshank Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street in Halifax.
The family would like to thank the Department of Neurology at the Halifax Infirmary, the Nova Scotia Rehabilitation Centre, and Hospice Halifax for their care of Karen in her final months of life.
In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Karen Chandler Living Numbers Fund at Dalhousie University would be appreciated. Donations may be made online at http://giving.dal.ca/karenchandler
