It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear matriarch, Kathleen Marian (Jennie) Haywood who passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit of the VG Hospital after a brief illness.
Born to immigrant parents, James and Rachede Arab on February 16, 1917, she was honoured to have been recognized as a survivor of the Halifax Explosion during the 100th anniversary ceremonies. She was the eldest of a family of eight children. After completing high school, she went into clerical work for the federal government supporting her family. It was then that she met and married a young sailor named Jim Haywood and her role changed to loving mother and navy wife as she raised her own family in what was then the newly built Westmount Subdivision. With the exception of a brief posting in Ireland during the construction of the aircraft carrier, Bonaventure, it remained the family home until the time of her death. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her infant brother Charlie, brothers Leo, Frank, Joe, sisters Sadie and Marguerite (Mickey). Also by son in-law Tom Akin and daughter-in-law Charlotte Haywood.
She is survived by her sister Catherine Cable, her children Jacqueline Haywood, James (Bonnie) Haywood, David Haywood and Mary Akin. Also by her grandchildren Lisa, Holly, Marshall, Thomas, Marah, Matthew and great grandchildren James, Ella, Frankie, Rosie, Calla and Jasper.
Jennie was a kind and loving person who gave of herself unconditionally. This was immediately recognizable, especially by the children and made her an instant favourite because her soft affection was so genuine. She had friends of all ages. She loved good food, especially dishes from her Lebanese culture and her happiest times always revolved around family, friends, food and drink.
Her devotion to the Catholic Church shared almost as large a part of her heart as her family. Having St. Agnes Church adjacent to her property allowed her to attend daily mass which was a great source of comfort to her. Jennie spent every available moment in prayer, fostering the thought among those close to her that she enjoyed a direct line to the Maker. Jennie was a devout member of the St. Agnes Children of Mary and had a special devotion to Our Lady.
Jennie was able to stay in her own home until two days before her death. Many people helped make this possible, and the family are especially grateful to the VON, neighbour Rosemary Doubleday, and grandson Marshall Haywood.
Honouring Jennie’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be celebrated 1 pm on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at St. Agnes Church, 6903 Mumford Road, Halifax with reception to follow in the Church Hall. Interment to follow at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VON or charity of your choice.
