It is with a saddened heart, yet one which is filled with wonderful memories that I announce (mom)- Marie Theresa Phelan- found her peace and rest, in the arms of our Lord on March 14, 2016. She passed away at the age of 90, quietly and gently during her sleep – at home. Mom had a great commitment to her faith and when she was no longer able to attend mass, she continued to receive Holy Communion at home on a weekly basis.
She was a wonderful, loving wife; mom; sister; Aunt and was a friend to all whom she met throughout her long life journey.
Born October 23, 1925 – mom was one of seven children of loving parents – the late William and late Elizabeth (Bowser) Asprey.
Mom will be remembered for her great sense of humor, her amazing knowledge of world history and her incredible, high level of “General Knowledge”- her large caring heart and her acceptance of people for whom they are.
Mom loved music, loved to sing; and there was a time she enjoyed long walks and going to the movies.
Mom loved all animals and there, always, was a cat, a dog or both at home.
She is survived by daughter, Kathleen of Bedford NS; sister Bernadette (Anges) Asprey of Halifax, NS; special nephew and close friend Robert MacKintosh of Halifax, NS; niece and Godchild Sharon Chiasson of Halifax, NS as well as many nieces and grandnieces; many nephews and grandnephews; great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.
Mom was predeceased by her husband, Harold Phelan; her only brother William Asprey; sisters; Jessie MacDougall; Helen Forhan; Veronica (Vera) Fader and Annie Young.
Mom and I want to offer a “special thank you” to Rob for all his kindness, his caring, his support and his selflessness in aiding and helping mom in her later years as she courageously faced the challenges her health and wellness presented her. Rob was instrumental in assuring she was able to do just that.
And mom wants to “thank” Agnes for all the delicious Sunday and birthday suppers at Novalea Drive. And of course for just “being there” for her and with her as her younger sister during her last month especially.
As per mom’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has been entrusted to Cruikshank’s Halifax Funeral Home and has taken place per mom’s request.
A Funeral service will be held at a later date in Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta Church (St. Stephen) 6032 Normandy Dr. Halifax.
Donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation , Nova Scotia or to a charity of your choice.
