It is with profound sadness that the DeBay family announces the passing of Marlene DeBay (Merrigan) of Halifax on November 22, 2025, at the VG Hospital, surrounded by her family. Born to the late Michael and Leonora (Musial) Merrigan, Marlene was predeceased by her loving husband James DeBay, and brother Mike Merrigan. She is survived by her devoted brother Myles, cherished sister Leonora (Charles Thorpe) and Aunts Sr. Marie Merrigan and Isabel Musial. She leaves behind her three sons—Dennis (Amy), Drew (Danielle), and Devin (Dawn) —who were her heart and purpose, and her beloved grandchildren Addy, Norrie, and Arlo, who brought her endless joy. She will also be deeply missed by her many loved cousins, with whom she shared lifelong bonds of family, laughter, and support.
A graduate of Acadia and Mount Saint Vincent Universities, Marlene dedicated her life to education and to the children she served. She began her teaching career in special education at William King Elementary, later moving to Cavalier Drive School where she shifted to elementary education. She completed her career at St. Stephen’s School in Halifax’s North End—a school that held particular meaning for her, as her father helped open its doors as principal in 1948. Marlene was a gifted and compassionate educator who believed deeply in the potential of every child.
First and foremost, Marlene was the ultimate mom. Her sons knew her as their steady anchor, their first call in moments of celebration, uncertainty, or need. She was the quiet strength, the warm perspective, and the unwavering love at the center of their lives. Marlene’s closest friends were loved just as fiercely, and she nurtured relationships that spanned decades with generosity, and steadfast loyalty.
Her favourite place in the world was on the Gulf Shore Road, where she found peace walking the sandy shores, watching the waves roll in, the lobster boats pass by, and the sun rise and set in colours that never failed to move her and most importantly, reading a good book. It was there that she felt most at home—surrounded by beauty, memories, and the people she loved.
Marlene lived a life grounded in faith, kindness, humility, and dedication to others. She was the matriarch of her family—steady, gentle, and strong—and her absence is felt profoundly by all who loved her so dearly.
The family would like to give special thanks to the care team at the Victoria General Hospital ICU unit 3A for their compassion and support.
