Catherine Nicholson passed away peacefully on the morning of May 5, 2018 at the QEII surrounded by family. Born in Halifax on May 26, 1928 to William J. and Geraldine (Donahoe) Curran, Catherine attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart, and went on to graduate business school. Always independent and ambitious, Catherine took on numerous jobs before settling into a career at the Kitz Matheson law firm as a legal secretary, and ultimately as office manager until her retirement in 1977.
In spite of a busy career, Catherine was a dedicated homemaker and active mother of four children, providing them with much love, guidance and encouragement. She thoroughly enjoyed travel vacations with her young family and in later years, hosting her ever-growing family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had a razor-sharp memory and enjoyed discussing her family tree and relating family stories, and was fiercely proud of her Irish heritage.
In her retirement years, she enjoyed yearly trips to Myrtle Beach, SC, with her husband and close life-long friends. She also enjoyed regular shopping trips to Bangor, ME with her daughters and her sister, Jean Knickle.
Her pride and joy in her later years would be her six great-grandchildren who were the light of her life until her final days.
Catherine is survived by her husband of 64 years, Douglas, her children Kevin, Janet (Wayne) King, Paul (Connie) of Moncton, NB, Cathy (Jean) Gallant, grandchildren Jeffrey (Alana Woods), Jennifer (Peter) Jorna, Madeline Kircher, Patrick Nicholson (Kristina Luus) of Dublin, Ireland , Gabrielle Gallant and great-grandchildren Cecilia, Aubrey, Rory, Ewan, Quinn and Julia. Catherine is also survived by her sisters Jean Knickle, Rebecca McGuire and Loretta Bennett, and her brother Bill Curran (Ottawa).
The family would like to thank the staff of unit 8.4 of the QEII for their caring and compassion, Father Francesco and Colleen for their prayers and comforting words, Dinah, for her kindness, and Catherine and Doug's neighbours, the Hollett's for their friendship and support over the years.
Cremation has taken place and visitation will be held at Cruikshank's Funeral Home on 2666 Windsor Street on Thursday, May the 10th from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Soul's Harbour, Operation Smile or the charity of your choice.
