

Scanlan, Mary Rita “Nana” – Our beloved Rita passed away peacefully surrounded by her family in Northwood on Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at the age of 90. Rita was an elementary teacher for over 25 years, most of those years with the Halifax School Board. She fully enjoyed life with her beloved husband, family, and friends in Halifax, Caribou Island, Guysborough, and Florida.
She was born on May 21, 1922, in Mulgrave to the late Damien and Josepha (Crispo) Anderson. She was predeceased by her husband Vincent and sister Dorothy.
Rita was the loving mother of Ronald (Carol), Donald (Valerie), and Stephen (Patricia) and sister of Alice MacDonald and Miriam Keefer. Nana is lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Jennifer Scanlan, Sara (Vince) Giordano, Andrew (Eva) Scanlan, Erinn (Matt) Smeltzer, Ryan (Leisha) Scanlan, Megan Scanlan, Leah (Jason) Kennedy, and Shannon Scanlan; great-grandchildren Hannah, Abigail, Luke, Kai, Vincent, and Aliana.
The family would like to thank the staff of Northwood 6 Centre for their loving care of our Mom/Nana.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 pm on Sunday, April 28, in Cruikshank’s Halifax Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am Monday, April 29, in St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, 6351 North Street, Halifax. Father Ron Cairns will officiate. The committal will take place following the funeral at 2:30 pm in Stella Maris Cemetery, Pictou.
