With heavy hearts, the family of Mary Jeanette Walton announce her peaceful passing on May 22, 2026. Born in Saint John, NB, on September 30, 1949, she was the eldest daughter of five children of George and Jeanette Walton.
Mary Jeanette moved to NS as a young woman and made it her home, residing in Halifax. While she never took a spouse or had her own children, she was loved and adored by many. She lived graciously with love and kindness in her heart and actions. She was delighted to hear news of a new birth, wedding, graduation or any accomplishment of those in her family- direct family or the vast extended family and community of those so dear to her. She was a fierce lover and protector of animals and rescued many cats over the years, having the opportunity to love and care for a few during her life. She would say that her heart was always full with tiny paw prints. She had a smile that instantly warmed and welcomed you. She could pass hours with her friends and family over a black coffee, and she could never arrive empty-handed! Her lemon loafs and fudge were legendary!
Mary Jeanette is survived by her sister Lorraine Taylor of Saint John, NB, sister in-law Lois Walton, nieces Dawn Marie Chetley (Andrew Johnston) of London, ON, Laura Saltzman (Gerald Mallet) of Halifax, Amy Walton (David Hoar) of Moncton, NB, Courtney Myers (Charlottetown, PEI), nephews Lester Perry, George Perry (April Cameron) of Saint John, NB and other great and grand nieces and nephews. She is also survived by very dear friends Shirley Jessome, Betty Church, Brenda Sangster, Lorraine Doucet and her family in faith at Rock Church, Halifax, including Pastor Chris and Jenn Ivany.
Besides her parents, Mary Jeanette was predeceased by her brothers George and Gerald Walton, her sister Marsha Saltzman, and brother’s in-law Mike Taylor and Ed Saltzman.
Service of Remembrance for Mary Jeanette will take place on Monday, June 1st at 11am, at the Rock Church, Halifax.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to Bide a While Cat Sanctuary, the IWK Children’s Hospital, or the Nova Scotia SPCA.
