Maude Louise Royer, 96, passed away with her family by her side, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, October 14 2014. Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of John and Grace Leclair. As a young woman, Mom was an outstanding athlete. She won numerous badminton championships and played shortstop in slow pitch baseball. Her competitive spirit was well known. She was also a talented pianist with a great fondness for the works of Chopin, and our home was often filled with the sounds of music and song.
During the Second World War mom met George A. Royer from Quebec who was serving with the Royal Canadian Navy. They were married in October 1944, and resided in North Sydney until 1965 when they relocated to Halifax. We remember her as an outstanding wife and mother whose happiest and proudest moments were spent with her husband, daughters and beloved granddaughter. She possessed a great sense of style, a love of fashion and an understated elegance. She loved travel and particularly enjoyed her visits to Europe, Florida and Barbados. Preparing holiday meals for family and close friends and spending weekends at her cottage in Chester surrounded by family, friends and spending time with her granddaughter were her greatest pleasures in her retirement years.
We would like to acknowledge the compassionate caregivers who brought joy and companionship to our mother's later years and who supported our family throughout. To Nancy, Audrey, Melina, June, Muriel, Dorothy, Jenny, Jan, Innis, Buffy, Tammy, Stella and all of the staff on 8C Northwood Center, we extend a sincere thank you. Mom is survived by two daughters, Mildred, Halifax, and Johnette, (husband, John MacEwen) Chester, much loved granddaughter Claire MacEwen of Ottawa and best friend Nancy Jesse, Halifax. She was predeceased by her husband George Royer, her parents and a sister in infancy. The family will receive condolences at a visitation and reception to be held at Cruickshank's Funeral Home on Windsor Street in Halifax, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 Thursday, October 23rd.
