Maurice Daniel Fougere

Maurice Daniel Fougere, age 76, passed away on August 18, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, on April 8, 1950, the first boy in a family of eight children born to Amable and Ida (Doyle) Fougere. With four older sisters awaiting his arrival, he was affectionately dubbed the “Great Maurice.”

Maurice was predeceased by his eldest sister, Jeanette (Fougere) Fielding.

He is survived by his sisters Marianne (Fougere) Rissesco, Helena (Fougere) McCay, and Margaret (Fougere) Lessard; and his brothers Philip Fougere, Robert Fougere, and Myles Fougere and his wife, Rose (MacKenzie) Fougere.

Maurice married Patricia (Coolen) Fougere in 1976. Together they raised two children.

Their son, Russell Fougere, and his wife, Jennifer (Babin) Fougere, live in Quispamsis, New Brunswick, with their two sons, Brigham and Samuel.

Their daughter, Amy Ida (Fougere) Friedt, and her husband, Jason Friedt, live in Eastern Passage with their daughter, Anna.

In his early years, Maurice was employed as a footman to Governor General Roland Michener in Ottawa, a period of his life of which he was very proud.

Upon returning to Nova Scotia, Maurice became a carpenter by trade. Even after retirement, he was always available to supervise his son’s and son-in-law’s projects, generously offering many gems of wisdom on the art of carpentry. He also built a lovely cottage for his wife, Patricia, in East River, a place the entire family continues to enjoy today.

Maurice loved playing cards and excelled at Queens—he always seemed to have the Queen of Spades up his sleeve. Crib was another passion, and many enjoyable games were shared with the Rissescos.

He had a wonderful sense of humour and, above all, loved his children and grandchildren dearly.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Thomas Aquinas Church, 1725 Oxford Street, Halifax, on August 28, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.

A reception will follow at the Saint Carlo Acutis Center, located in the same building.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Maurice’s memory may be made to the IWK Children’s Hospital.
