Peter Burton MacDougall

Peter passed away on the morning of May 2, 2019 after suffering for years from Parkinson’s Disease. He was the son of Austin and May (Sangster) MacDougall of Bedford, NS. Peter was a member of the first graduating class in architecture from the Nova Scotia Technical College, now Dalhousie University, in 1965.

After graduation, he worked in architectural consulting offices in Toronto, Vancouver and Halifax, later joining Public Works and Government Services Canada where he had a 30-year career. Prior to his retirement he was the manager of Architectural and Engineering Resources for the Atlantic Region. He was a life-long member of the Nova Scotia Association of Architects and a lifetime member of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.

Peter had varied interests. He enjoyed small sailboat racing and later family cruising, and was the skipper of the family C & C 33 “Calburga.” As an amateur musician he played cello for many years with the Chebucto Orchestra and the Caledonia Orchestra of Nova Scotia. He enjoyed hiking and together with Gail and friends went on hiking vacations in British Columbia, U.S.A, England, New Zealand and Australia. His last venture was a solo hike across England along a section of Hadrian’s Wall. Above all, he enjoyed many happy summers with family at their cottage and boathouse in Musquodoboit Harbour and was never happier than when he was working on one of his “projects” with the family.

He is survived by his life partner, Gail (Risdill) MacDougall with whom he shared a loving marriage for 50 years, brothers William Halifax, James (Margaret) Newcastle, Australia, sister in law Mary, Kitchener, his two children Maeve (Mark), Halifax, Graham (Lauren), Halifax, five grandchildren Alexandre, Dominic, Elizabeth (Ella), Olivia, Vivienne, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A private burial was held on Wednesday, May 8 and a celebration of life will occur on Saturday, May 18 at 1 pm at the Saint Mary’s Boat Club in Halifax. Families and children are welcome. Those wishing to send condolences can do so online through Cruikshank’s Funeral Home in Halifax and donations, in lieu of flowers, can be made in Peter’s name to the Halifax Region Children’s Aid Foundation.

The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of 4 C at Northwood for the compassionate and respectful care they gave to Peter over the past two and a half years.

Peter preceded me at the Tech; when I graduated and went searching for a job in Toronto, Peter had worked at the firm. When I was interviewed they asked me if I had gone to the same school of architecture than Peter and when I answered positive, they hired me immediately. Peter was outstanding as a professional and as a person. My memory of him is of a very handsome people loving individual.

I grew up with Peter in Bedford NS
The MacDougalls and Archibalds were good friends.
We went to the same school, Central Bedford School.
Growing up in Bedford during the 40’s and 50’s was delightful and we “ran free” just as long as we were home for meals.
My condolences to Peter’s family. With heartfelt love

I have many fond memories of the music program at Bedford Baptist Church with Peter's Dad and of my friendship with jim: as a teenager I enjoyed times in the MacDougall's happy home and knowing Peter, Bill, May and Austin. I admired Peter's fortitude in overcoming an upper respiratory issue when he was young and I am sorry he had to endure such suffering recently. While this is a sad family time, there have been many blessings and there is much to celebrate in his accomplishments and quiet sincerity. I send my condolences to the entire MacDougall Family.

Dear Gail and family:
So sorry to hear of Peter's death, another link in the chain has been broken. Drew enjoyed Peter's visits so very much. Peter was one of a handful of people who always saw Drew as Drew not as his condition. While it is never easy to lose a loved one be comforted by the knowledge that Peter is now at peace and no longer confined by Parkinson's. As our daughter Letitia said, "Peter was not only a gentleman he was also a gentle man."

Our very sincere condolences to the whole MacDougall clan on the loss of your beloved Peter. Although we did not know Peter personally, we feel as though we have always known him through stories told to us by our dear friends Jim MacDougall and Margaret Ashford. We hope you will be comforted by wonderful memories now and in the years to come.

My deepest condolences to Gail and family. Peter was always a pleasure to be around when I volunteered. I'm not sure I've ever met someone who enjoyed the paper as much as he did. He won't be forgotten ❤
