It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Sidney Lloyd Jackson, 85, of Halifax on July 28, 2018. Born November 26, 1932, in the lightkeeper’s house on Ingonish Island, he was son of the late Carl Thomas Jackson and Carrie Augusta Roper. Besides his parents, Sid was predeceased in 2014 by his beloved wife of nearly 58 years, Rosalie Jean Hyland, and brother, Cyril Jackson, of Ingonish.
He is survived by two sons; Michael Sidney Jackson and his wife Sally Bushell of Calgary and Marshville, NS (children: Emily, Sarah, and Ben) and Daniel Lloyd Jackson and his wife Jocelyn MacDonald of Halifax (children: Charlotte and Flora); sisters, Lois Hardy of Ingonish and Isa Baker, of Sydney; plus many nieces and nephews.
Raised in Ingonish, Sid moved to Halifax at the age of 19 and before long found work at Canada Post where he spent a 35 year career including management roles in Public Relations and Priority Post. Sid found great joy and meaning in service to others. He was an active member of Bethany United Church, having met Rosalie there at Young People’s Group in 1954. For many years he volunteered with the Y’s Men’s Club selling Christmas trees at the Wanderers Grounds, and “Scouter Sid” was a long-serving leader of the 2nd Fairview Scout troop. After surviving his first heart attack in 1988 he felt a strong sense of gratitude that led him to volunteer with the heart support group for 20 years, and also as a model patient for medical students.
Sid and Rosalie raised their boys on Adelaide Avenue where for 53 years Sid created and tended extensive gardens and each Christmas put on a beautiful light show. After moving to the Berkeley Gladstone with Rosalie in early 2013, Sid made many new friendships and maintained old ones with frequent visitors to his apartment and the ‘poker room’ made famous in the Berkeley’s TV ads. Sid made friends easily; his warm smile and kind manner made him popular with all who met him.
Visitation will be held in Cruickshank’s Halifax Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street on Friday, August 3, from 2:00-4:00 pm and 7:00-9:00 pm. The funeral will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 4, at Bethany United Church, 7171 Clinton Ave., Halifax, Rev. Kevin Little officiating, with a reception to follow in the church hall. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Halifax. Donations in Sid’s memory may be made to Bethany United Church or the QEII Health Sciences Centre Foundation. Special thanks to all the medical professionals who gave him excellent care over the years, and the staff of the Berkeley Gladstone who provided a joyous home environment.
Thank you Dad, for being our ever-loving father.
