

family of Thelma Mae Bowness announce her passing on August 27, 2014, with
her loving family at her side. The daughter of Dan Archie MacDonald and
Mabel Isabel MacLeod, Thelma was born in Dutch Brook, Cape Breton Island,
on August 3, 1931. Thelma attended Sydney Academy and pursued secretarial
studies. Her career included serving as secretary to the Canada Games in
1969 as well as the NS Hall of Fame AHL Champion Nova Scotia Voyageurs. Mom
loved skating and was especially proud of winning a Provincial Speed Skating
Championship . She also owned and operated Sportique Sportswear and the
Wild Rose Inn in Kentville, NS. Thelma was well known for her love of
fashion, tennis, her Westies and her endless passion for the game of hockey
which led to her marriage in 1951 to Bob Bowness. Their hockey life led
them to many different parts of North America where they were blessed with
the birth of four children in four different cities. They loved to travel
and spent their later winters in Florida. She and "Poppy" loved to
entertain and shared many happy summers hosting their extended family and
friends . Grandma never missed the chance to cheer on a grandchild at a
hockey, gymnastics or tennis event. She was so proud of them and will be
missed dearly by all of us. She was predeceased by her parents, her beloved
husband, Robert S. Bowness, her sisters Shirley Mae & Audrey, and brothers
Freddie, Norman, Stewart and Gordon. She is survived by brother Ken
(Louise) MacDonald, Boston, Ma., Freda (Brian) Hogan, Saint John, NB and
her 4 children Laurie (Lori Anne LeBlanc), Laureen (Bruce Paget), Richard
(Judy Egan) and Shirley (Stewart McInnes) as well as 8 grandchildren, Lance
and Scott Bowness, Robbee Priest , Rick Jr., Ryan & Kristen Bowness and
Sarah and Connie McInnes. She was a special aunt to so many nieces and
nephews and a second mother to all who knew her. Thelma has requested there
be no visitation. Memorial Service to be held at St. Matthews United
Church, 1479 Barrington Street, Halifax, on Friday August 29, 2014, at 4:00
p.m. To continue with Thelma's lifelong passion for hockey and to help
under-privileged Maritime children play hockey next season, donations can be
